Children's' National Medical Center

At Children's' National Medical Center, Dr. Jennifer Tender was on hand to deliver the Silver award to the hospital for its workplace lactation support. Meeting in the large and colorful atrium of the hospital, Jodie Drum, RN, IBCLC in the NICU was there to accept the award. It was a challenge to find space and funding to dedicate for employee lactation rooms, but CNMC recognized its importance. Three years ago the hospital also made available to employees bags to sterilize breast pumps and lactation kits. New space recently became available in the Health Clinic so now there are three rooms for employees and patients to use! The rooms are used frequently with women constantly coming and going. Maureen Maurano, Nursing supervisor in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, said she used the lactation room for twelve months with her first child and for five months with her second. This made her full time job much easier! The photo with three people and award is Dr. Jennifer Tender of CNMC and the DCBFC, Tico Minor and Jodie Drum on the right.
